How to get following?

Posted by StrangestSandal - 1 month ago

Hey guys

I'm new to this platform and I want to figure out how to start growing a following!

I'm admittedly not the most, active, person on the internet, but since I'm a hobbyist I don't mind having a huge following.

I'm trying to see if I can reach at least 100 followers.

What can I do to rise up in the ranks?

Hey man, so, first thing you gotta know is that Newgrounds is an website and one of the firsts dedicated to community, art, games and animations, even before social media. So do not expect to be an algorithm or any trending shenanigans like on Tiktok. The best way is to interact, be nice, participate on the forums and discussions and do your best on the content you make, love the community and the community will love you back.

One more thing, what does being scouted mean? everytime I've posted something here it says I "haven't been scouted yet" and I don't know what that necessarily means or if it's important, do you know what it's for?

@StrangestSandal In Newgrounds we have a scouting system to newcomers. Being scouted means that your art has been approved by another artist so it will now appear in the art portal. Otherwise, if you are not scouted the only way to people find your work is in the undiscovered section or to click on your profile link and browse on your profile page. There is more info here: https://ornery.newgrounds.com/news/post/388624

Just a reminder, DO NOT ask to be scouted.

Oh, alright, thanks for telling me, may as well get on the grind then.

Hi, first thing to keep in mind when using this site is that there is no algorithm, luckily I would say because:

1) you are not punished by not being active (i.e. shadowban like it happens on IG)
2) you don't enter an eco-chamber feed
3) it's a user-generated content website where people interact and decide stuff

Because it's a very community-centered website the first step is interaction. Interact with people, you can do by faving, reviewing stuff, participating in forum threads if you want, start a forum thread (read rules before) if you want and ask for constructive feedback, opening an art thread where people can discover your art and find it interesting enough to follow you. Be nice and respectful of others, read rules about each forum section and the ToS you can find here: https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/help-information/terms-of-use

here the FAQs: https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/frequently-asked-questions

And these are the art guidelines for example, if you want to see more specific rules: https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/help-information/terms-of-use/art-guidelines

Newgrounds is a site about creativity in the shape of art, videos, games, music but also in the shape of communication with others, be creative, unique if you want. I've seen users becoming well-known and loved because of the way they interact with others in forums, or even because they personalize their messages in forum threads.

Reading the first comment I see the concept of scouting has been mentioned with the famous journal made by Orney, I would also like to add these other two links about it:

https://lost-psyren.newgrounds.com/news/post/1461364

https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1418778

Another great way to gain traction and a following base is to participate to collabs, don't be shy if you like to collaborate, ofc read rules first since some collabs are scout-only, but here the link to the forum section dedicated to collaborations:

https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/forum/19

and if you really want to work on your art, this forum thread is pure gold, go read it and use its resources: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1453904/1

I hope you will have a lot of fun here and remember to go and interact at your own pace, don't force interactions when you don't feel like, be yourself and honest with yourself, and don't hesitate to ask^^

Be awesome, make awesome stuff, talk to awesome people. That's pretty much it. Do that and the people will come. Make yourself and your stuff personally known to others.

@StrangestSandal To ensure quality control, Newgrounds requires confirmed quality artists to vouch for your skill before your work will be permitted in the main art portal. https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/help-information/content-submission/scouting

I can only confirm what the others here already said. All of what they wrote is 10/10 advice.

The only thing I would add to that is that you should go and explore the site a bit. Look around, figure out how things look like from a user's side of things, and see what works of other artists appeal to you. Aside from discovering new artists and enjoying the art you will also be able to pick up a few things about how others present their works - and which of those presentation methods appeal to you.
